The Black Manufacturing Co. of Chicago produced highwheelers under the name of Chicago Motor Buggy from 1908 to 1909. Thought by some to be a transitional vehicle from the horse-drawn buggy, the highwheeler actually originated in the Chicago area in response to the need for a motor vehicle with road clearance suitable for deeply rutted out-of-town roads.
